One of the 20 major projects for independentinnovation industrialization in Tianjin — DawningHigh-Performance Computer and its industrializationare in progress smoothly. Based onindependent research and manufacturing andjointly developed by the Institute of ComputingTechnology of Chinese Academy of Science(CAS) and Dawning Information Industry Co.,Ltd., the Dawning 5000 has come out of horizonand been put into the batch production inSeptember, 2008. Dawning 5000 operates at aspeed of 100 trillion every second.

The research success and batch production ofDawning 5000 further accelerate the process forTianjin to drive the industrialization of high-performancecomputers. The city has become themost important manufacturing base hub highperformancecomputer R&D and production.

The Dawning Industrial Base that covers 60 muwas set up and put into production in July 2006.It is a professional manufacturing base withadvanced technology, whose annual productioncapacity of 100,000 computers. It is a milestonein the process of high-performance computerindustrialization in China.

Apart from production, the Dawning IndustrialBase in Tianjin also plays a key role as the R&Dcenter. Together with Beijing Dawning R&DCenter, Institute of Computing Technology ofChinese Academy of Science (CAS), the threeinstitutes come up with a powerful R&D system.

Tianjin Dawning Information Industry Co., Ltdis funded by the Institute of Computing Technologyof Chinese Academy of Science (CAS),Tianjin Hi-tech Investment & Guaranty Co., Ltd.,and Beijing Dawning Computer Co., Ltd. It relieson the technology support from the Institute ofComputing Technology of CAS and works on thedesign, development, manufacturing and salesof high-performance computer and related softwareto meet the needs from overseas market.This base has already applied for 15 patents intotal, including 3 patents for invention, and 2 occupationstandards.

The successful production of Dawning 4000A,a top 10 supercomputer in the world with theoperating speed of 11 trillion floating-pointsper second, squeezed China into the top threecountries being able to develop 10 trillion floating-point high-performance computer after theUS and Japan.

Dawning 5000 broke this record in June 2008with a capability of more than 100 trillions ofcomputing operations per second. It made itsstable and distinctive contribution for the datacomputation when exploiting the one-billion-tonCaofeidian oilfield. Dawning high-performancecomputer played a key role in this process, whichmade Dawning be awarded as the “Oil Pioneer”.

Dawning 5000 makes China become the secondcountry after the US, being able to manufacturehigh-performance commercial computer withoperating speed of 100 trillion per second. Thisfact proves China’s world-class leading capabilityin producing, maintaining and applying highperformancecommercial computers.

Dawning high-performance computer has beendominating the domestic market for 11 consecutiveyears. It takes over 70 percent of marketingshares for domestic production of highperformancecomputer, and exceeds importedproducts in the field of high-performance computingcluster. Based on independent intellectualproperty rights, Dawning high-performancecomputer products of different categories havebeen widely applied in many fields and segments,such as governments, education, finance,telecommunication, biology, weather forecastand oil exploration.

Since Chinese Academy of Science and TianjinMunicipal Government signed the agreement forcomprehensive technology corporation in July2005, an effective communication and corporationmechanism has been established. With theirjoint efforts, there come into great achievementsin terms of building up R&D center and industrialbase, transformation of technology, and talentexchange, etc..
