16.Tianjin will be the largest manufacturing center for mobile phone in China with the production capacity of 200 million units

Tianjin is dubbed the “city of mobile phone”. Itsindustrial scale will be further enhanced within2 years. It will establish a 200-million-unit capacityevery year, which may be China’s largestmobile phone manufacturing base.

Tianjin is one of the first batch of nationallevelof electronic information industrial base.Electronic information industry is the first pillarindustry in Tianjin. Its industrial output valuetakes up 23 percent of the whole city, which isthe 5th largest one in China.

Since in 1992 Motorola established the firstmobile phone factory in TEDA, Tianjin hasattracted lots of domestic and overseas enterprisesto set up their factories, such as Samsung,Kyocera, Jabil, and ZTE Corporation, etc..

Tianjin has already established a 150 millionunits per year mobile phone manufacturingbase with USA’s Motorola (the second largestmanufacturer in the world), South Korea’sSamsung (the third largest manufacturer in theworld), and Japan’s Sanyo as the core brands.Tianjin keeps in pace with the advanced technologyof mobile communication terminals,which can drive the development of the wholeindustry in Tianjin and the areas nearby.

Tianjin has an improved environment for industriesrelated to mobile phone, and establishesan extensive industrial cluster with the completefunction. There are almost 200 supportingproduction enterprises in Tianjin, whichcomes into 5 manufacturing bases for supportingproducts.

There is the manufacturing center for chipresistor in Tianjin, represented by SamsungElectro-Mechanics, Panasonic, and Rohm.Represented by Freescale, and SemiconductorManufacturing International Corporation(“SMIC”), Tianjin is also a manufacturing centerfor integrated circuit. Besides, Tianjin has thebattery-manufacturing center, which mainlyrepresented by Tianjin Lishen Battery Joint-Stock Co. Ltd., Samsung SDI, J Power, and TianjinLantian Sanyo Battery Co., Ltd. Representedby CTS (Tianjin) Electronics Company, Ltd, andGE, Tianjin establishes the manufacturing centerfor electronic elements.

Tianjin established an international communicationplatform, and successfully organized 6International Mobile Phone Industry Exhibitionand Forum (IMIE), which is the largest eventin this industry with the most internationalparticipants in China. It has become the mostattractive trade platform for mobile phoneindustry, which created lots of opportunitiesfor the domestic mobile phone and supportingproduction enterprises.

With such a powerful background, Tianjin hasattracted more and more enterprises to investtheir business here, which is the driving factorfor the industrial development.

Jabil increased their investment to the factoriesin Tianjin. They further added facilities like LCDto the existed molds and injection-moldedparts. Jabil undertakes the apparatus assembling,and sets up 4 OEM production linesmainly for Nokia. The products of top threemobile phone manufacturers will be entirelyform their factories in Tianjin.

Following the operation of ZTE Corporation’s3G mobile phone R&D center and the projectsof Jabil Green Point (JGP) and Leimone Groupin the next two years, Tianjin’s mobile phonemanufacturing capacity will reach the 200-million-unit level. Tianjin will keep the advancedlevel in terms of mobile communication production,and become the largest manufacturingcenter.

According to the statistics from Ministry of Industryand Information Technology, China hasproduced 242 million mobile phone units forthe first five months in 2008. The total amountof mobile phone production in China was 548million units in 2007, which took up around 40percent of the global output. Tianjin produced97.7877 million units in 2007, which is 17.8 percentof the whole country level.
