47.The world’s biggest LED illumination demonstration project is shaping the future of Tianjin’s industrialization base for semiconductor illumination

In the new campus of Tianjin Polytechnic University,there are approximately 5,000 60-wattor 80-watt semiconductor lamps dotted allaround the roads, lawns and dormitories. Theuniversity is enjoying its own achievements inscientific research. In the past one year andmore, these energy-efficient lamps have savedup to RMB 1.8 million yuan and they are alsothe world’s biggest-scale semiconductor illuminationdemonstration project.

These lamps are the research achievement bythe joint effort of the university and PhysicsInstitute of Chinese Academy of Sciences. ForChina, a country inflicted by an ever-increasingthreat of energy shortage, seeking and promotingnew energy-efficient technology are verypromising in terms of market prospect. Thesituation also foretells the emergence of a newtechnology.

As a matter of fact, Tianjin has established DevelopmentCenter for Semi-conductor IlluminationProject which combines manufacturing,studying and researching. It has preliminarilycompleted the R&D at all levels and the industriallayout, improving the R&D of major materialsfor LED and final products, making possiblethe industrialization of the major materials forsemi-conductor illumination with an output of10,000 pieces per month.

Supported by Tianjin Polytechnic University,Tianjin has established Tianjin DevelopmentCenter for Semi-conductor Illumination Project,which combines manufacturing, studying andresearching, in association with 11 institutesincluding the Physics Institute of Chinese Academyof Sciences, Tianjin University and TianjinHaibo Electro Optical Technology Co., Ltd.

Presently, Tianjin Haibo Electro Optical TechnologyCo., Ltd. is cooperating with TianjinPolytechnic University to industrialize generalsemi-conductor lamps. Now they are capableof manufacturing 10,000 street lamps and100,000 down lights every year. The sale of2007 totaled RMB 26 million yuan and theproducts are used in many demonstrationprojects in China.

This company also successfully developed thefirst LED car headlight independently, supportedby the State. The headlight consists ofthe high-beam light, parking light and steeringlight adopting high-brightness LED illumination.The high-beam light has passed the statestandardtest of China Automotive Technology& Research Center.

American technological research teams arealso coming to Tianjin to set up a company todevelop and industrialize sapphire substrate.The technological indexes of the product notonly reach the international standards of productsof its kind, but also surpass those of worldrenowned high-quality products in main areasof planeness, high precision in directioningand so on so forth. Presently an assembly linehas been finished with monthly productivity of5,000 pieces. It is the only enterprise in Chinawhich adopts independently-developed technologyto produce gallium nitride substrate.

Another research institute, China ElectronicsTechnology Corporation Research InstituteNo. 46, has realized the industrialization of thepreparative technique for production of galliumarsenide materials. In the second half of 2008,the manufacturing scale for gallium arsenidepolished pads reaches 30,000 per month andmakes the company the biggest manufacturerof gallium arsenide substrate domestically.

According to Tianjin Science Committee,through the combination of manufacturing,studying and researching, Tianjin will havesemi-conductor illumination industrial clusterin the Binhai New Area and ultimately establishState-level R&D transformation center for semiconductorillumination. There will be five to tencompetitive key enterprises with annual saletotaling RMB 1.5 to 2 billion yuan.
