In Tianjin, medical wastes and trash, such asonce-off needles, injectors or pledget, will becollected by relevant departments and disposedin Tianjin Hazardous Waste Treatmentand Disposal Center.

As one of the earliest hazardous waste treatmentand disposal centers in China, this centerpioneers in facility construction for poisonousand hazardous waste treatment and disposal.

Built in Jinnan District in 1999, the center coversan area of 87,600 square meters with totalinvestment of RMB 135 million yuan. The centeris composed of four segments: a poisonousand harmful waste incineration plant, whichcan dispose 13,500 tons of waste per year;a poisonous and harmful waste landfill site, which can bury 6,200 tons of waste per year;a poisonous and harmful waste recycling andreusing plant where 10,000 tons of waste metalliquid and waste solvents can be recycled andreused per year; a plant of medical waste recollection, transportation, treat and disposal, which can dispose 7,300 tons of waste per year.

Since September 1, 2003, this center has beendisposing all the hazardous waste in Tianjinwith yearly disposal capacity reaching 37,000tons, ensuring the collection and safe disposalof medical waste and various kinds of chemicalwaste. It is in this center that 10 tons of highlytoxic pesticide, prohibited by Tianjin governmentand later seized by relevant departmentsin charge, was properly disposed.

There are 47 categories and 600 kinds of hazardouswaste. Currently, the hazardous wastein Tianjin mainly contains the useless and necroticbody parts after operation in hospitals, infectious goods, waste drugs, toxic industrialwaste, harmful pesticide, waste battery, wasteacid, waste alkali, waste solvents and poisonousand harmful chemicals.

Integrating the recycling and reusing, incinerationand safe land-filling, this center hasbecome a modern model base for poisonous, harmful, and hazardous waste treatment anddisposal. It is thus positively commented as“Tianjin Model” by relevant national departmentsin China.

The acceleration of industrialization of Chinabrings about a rapid increase of solid waste, which leads to increasingly serious damageto the environment without inefficient recyclingand reusing of resources and advancedfacilities for waste disposal. Therefore, how todispose hazardous wastes in a safe and propermanner has become an important task for thesake of environmental protection.

Referring to the technology, standard, operationalmodel adopted in “Tianjin Model”,Chinese government invested 15 billion yuan in2004 to build more than 300 hazardous wastedisposal centers all over the country.

Audited by the Siemon Environment AuditCompany of the US, the Tianjin center is fullyqualified to handle businesses of waste disposalfor transnational corporations acrossthe world.

Tianjin will soon witness in the Binhai NewArea the establishment of another hazardouswaste decontamination plant, whose daily disposingcapacity amounts to 100 tons.
