Deforestation in Brazil's Amazon rainforest region reached 75 square km in November, up 21 percent from the same period last year, according to a private study released Tuesday.

The study by the Amazon Institute of People and the Environment (Imazon), a non-government organization, said the greatest deforestation was registered in the northern state of Para, which lost 51 square km of forests in November, 69 percent of the total newly deforested area.

Second on the list is the state of Amazonas, also in the northern region, which witnessed eight square km of deforested area, or 11 percent of the total figures. The midwestern state of Mato Grosso was third, with five square km, 6 percent of the total.

However, figures may be even higher, as 32 percent of the forest was not visible due to cloud in November. According to Imazon, the unmapped region corresponds to most of the territory of Amapa and Acre states, both located in the northern region.

Additionally, Imazon reported that the degraded forest areas, which have not been completely destroyed, amounted to 29 square kms in November, 55 percent of which were registered in Para followed by Mato Grosso, with 22 percent, and Amazonas, with 13 percent.

According to Imazon, the Amazon rainforest lost a total of 757 square km from August to November, up 29 percent from the same period in 2008.
