  Food is important in life. Visitors coming to Tianjin may enjoy the unique cateringculture of Tianjin. Tianjinese are fond of food and also eat practically.Earlier Tianjin Wei, as the largest water dock of north China, had gathered numerousmerchants, vehicles and horses. Big shots had to eat, small trademenalso had to eat. Such two kinds of people gave birth to the prosperous cateringculture of Tianjin.

  Guifaxiang Fried Dough Twists (18th Street Fried Dough Twists):More than one hundred years ago, therewas a dough twists shop on the 18thStreet of Tianjin, named Guifaxiang. Itsowner, Liu Laoba (the 8th son of Liu Family),with an intent to distinguish his twistsfrom others, added various fillings inbetween the white stick and twisted stick,and chose sweet-scented osmanthus, sesame,red-green dies and rock candy, etc., as ingredients. Upon repeated trials, he finallyturned out dough twists with various fillings, which were golden and oily, sweet andyummy, and can be kept for long period without getting sticky. Since then GuifaxiangFried Dough Twists has enjoyed an established fameand been popular in market. Visitors to Tianjinfrom home and abroad will take some boxes oftwists before leaving Tianjin.

  Dafulai Crispy Rice:Originated from Guangxu Period, Qing Dynasty, Dafulai Crispy Riceis prepared by cutting green bean fried cakes into the shape of willowleaves, and then dipping into vegetable sauce. When filling theminto bowl, add many special auxiliary materials, such assesame paste and caraway, etc. The crispy rice tastes soft andsmooth, fresh and clear, and is welcomed by the mass.

  Originated from Guangxu Period, QingDynasty, its first shop owner was LiuWanchun, being named Fried Cake Liu,who rent a shop in a narrow Erduoyan Hutong at the Beimenwai Street. He was nicknamedErduoyan Fried Rice Cake, though Zengshengcheng Tablet was hanging there.The cake has a golden color, whose outer skin is crisp, interior is sticky, and the insidefilling of sweetened bean paste is black, fine, sweet and yummy.

  Originated in 1928, it became popular because its originator, Fei Xiaozeng, once soldsweetened dried cake in the name of Zhilanzhai. Zhilanzhai Dried Cake is prepared bysteaming the powder grinded from best-selected special Xiaozhan Rice of Tianjin andsuperfine sticky rice with various fillings, e.g., bean paste and white sugar, etc. and withsome seeds of pine nut and sunflower spread on its top. Final product is soft, white, butnot sticky, no power falling off, with special taste. It can be eaten whether it’s cold or hot.

  Sticky Sugar Zhang:Sticky Sugar was made around Liangjiazuiarea (now within Hongqiao District) ofTianjin by Zhang Family during GuangxuPeriod of Qing Dynasty. At the beginning of the 20th century, Zhang Jun, its the secondgeneration, improved its production process, using natural materials, such as sesame,white granulated sugar and fine starch, to make sticky sugar, which tastes numbed anddelicious, light and sweet, soft and chewing-resisting, thus became popular.

  Headquarter of Go-believe Restaurant:Located at 322 Heping Road, Heping District, Go-believe Restaurant of Steamed Bunwith fillings had an original name of Dejuhao, with over one hundred years’ history. Atthe beginning, the restaurant was becoming more and more prosperous, and its originator,Gao Guiyou, nicknamed Gou Zi, was too busy to talk with customers. Thus peoplemade fun of him by saying Gou Zi Sells Steamed Bun and Would Care Nobody. After aconsiderable period of time, Goubuli (Go Believe) became well-known, while the name ofDejuhao was forgotten. Go-believe steamed bun is made by steaming half leaven doughskin with fresh meat fillings. Totally eight steps are connected with one another. Eachsteamed bun has at least 15 wrinkles, fine and beautiful, fresh and yummy, fatty but notgreasy. Go-believe Steamed Bun was not only welcomed by Empress Dowager Cixi inhistory, but also very popular now among customers both at home and abroad.

  Headquarter of Hongqishun Restaurant:Located at 668 Dagunan Road, Hexi District,it got this name with a meaning ofProsperous Business and Everything GoingSmoothly. It’s an old brand of Chinawith over 70 years’ history. If you want to enjoy original Muslim meals, HongqishunRestaurant is your first choice. Its special dishes include Braised Ox Tail in BrownSauce, Sauted Ox Tripe with Coriander and Pot Mutton, etc.

  Tianjin Zhengyangchun Roasted Duck Restaurant:The headquarter locates at 146 LiaoningRoad, Heping District, and its originalname was Zhengyangchun Duck Buildingand became popular since Mao Zedongvisited here in 1958. Its unique hanging oven roastedduck has date color, whose outside is crisp and inside istender, crisp and tasty, fatty but not greasy. It’s knownthe First Dish in the World.

  Tianjin Baijiao Dumpling Restaurant:It’s a national large scale chain restaurantfeaturing dumpling, the traditional Chinese food.
