Handicrafts enjoy an established fame at home and abroadfor its long history, rich varieties and exquisite skills. Among them, YangliuqingNew Year Paintings, Clay Figurine Zhang Colorful Sculpture, Kite Wei havebeen listed as national non-material cultural heritages.

Clay Figurine Zhang Colorful Sculpture:Zhang Mingshan (1826—1906), the originatorof clay figurine Zhang ColorfulSculpture had a special skill of makingclay figurines. He could knead vivid humanfigurines by hand in his sleeves duringtalking with others, thus got the nameClay Figurine Zhang. Its characteristicsare that the figurine is vivid both in shapeand in expression, with clear personality,and its painting and coloring introducesthe skills of traditional pen painting and folk NewYear Paintings, thus becoming a folk arts with establishedfame.

Brick Sculpture Liu:Liu Fengming (1889—1978) was an outstanding handicraftsman in the field of bricksculpture, born in Tianjin. He was the grandson of Ma Shunqing, the famous bricksculpture handicraftsman, and inherited and developed the Ma Family’s stacking andsticking method, e.g., sticking numerous small bricks on the same brick drawing, tomake the drawing more accidented and undulant. He created many excellent brickcarving and architect works, e.g. Nine Lions, Dragon and Phoenix, The Outlaws of theMarsh, etc., of which, Romance of the Three Kingdoms is a representative, with vividimage and unusual vigor, which is really breathtaking.

Yangliuqing New Year Paintings:It’s one of the three largest folk New YearPaintings of China, originated at the Yangliuqing Town of Tianjin at the beginning ofthe 17th century, thus got its current name. Yangliuqing New Year Paintings is preparedby combination of wood sculpture and manual painting skills, with not only strongwood carving sense, but also unique style of ethnic painting. The paintings utilize bothallegoric and true-life methods, using materials from daily life, folk customs and historicalstories. It is a folk handicraft popular among the people.

Kite Wei:Wei Yuantai (1872—1961), the famous kitemaker, engaged his whole life in makingkites, and developed nearly 200 varieties of kites including flatstyle, tridimensional style, single style, string style, whole style andcombination styles one after another, and was titled Kite Wei. KiteWei feature best selected materials, varied shapes, exquisite skills,vivid colorful paintings and stable flying. He once was granted goldenmedal at the Universal Fair held at Panama in 1914.
