Furthermore, they were surprised to know that it took only over 8 months to complete construction, as they were totally convinced by Tianjin speed. The construction of the project Meijiang Convention Center started on Sept 15, 2009, and completed in May, 2010. Covering a total floor area of 230,000 ㎡and a construction area of 100,000㎡, the key project of Tianjin has always attracted people’s attention starting from the preparation period until the official completion. And many Tianjin citizens have the honor to witness the whole construction process featuring “almost presenting a new look each day”.

During the visit on site, the journalist got to know Meijiang Convention Center boasts extremely high rate of specifications. Of 98,000 ㎡ of construction area of exhibition halls, those with refined decoration accounts for 40,000 ㎡, a proportion rarely seen in the construction of convention centers. Meijiang Convention Center consists of modern exhibition halls, and various conference halls with comprehensive functions. The convention center is equipped with a conference hall that can accommodate 2000 people at most, a VIP reception hall of 800 ㎡, 10 meeting rooms of about 300 ㎡, and several small and medium-sized conference rooms, reception rooms and negotiation rooms, thus a real combination of exhibition and conference. In the future, the center is bound to be chosen as the venue of many high-end international and national conferences and exhibitions. In addition, the landscape lake of 380,000 ㎡ nearby constitutes a green enjoyment for those visiting the convention center.

It is known that the construction period of Meijiang Convention Center prolonged the whole winter. And the relatively lower temperature and excessive rains and snows of this winter constitute a great challenge for the construction arrangements, making the originally tight construction period more strained. Teda Construction Group has established a scientific plan for construction and management, in which more time is saved for the latter phase due to a tighter schedule in the previous phase. In the process of construction, the staff works around the clock by upholding the entrepreneur spirit of “weekdays plus weekend, daytime plus night”. Even during the spring festival holidays, both the frontline construction workers and project managers spared no efforts. Instead of suspending the work, they celebrated the lunar New Year’s Eve on the building site. Considering the accelerated speed in all the steps in the construction due to the tight schedule, the construction security and project quality have always been considered as top priority.

The project design manager said, “As the design directly affects the cost, progress, quality and follow-up use of the project, we determine to conduct advanced control after systematic considerations and frequent demonstration. For example, about 100 million RMB Yuan has been saved as a result of optimal design after repeated studies and researches in the initial stage of design. The construction schedule has been ensured by the design of main steel structure, and the quality of the project by the repeated load tests in the process. The design of trapdoor helps greatly reduce the energy consumption in the latter period.”

“Prior to the construction, we have formulated a systematic quality management system, and proposed Luban Award as the objective of project quality management. Owing to the tight schedule, the outfield processing and on-site construction are carried out at the same time. As for the outfield processing and materials, strict inspection, acceptance and sample sealing were conducted; in terms of on-site construction, a quality supervision team was set up to check up the construction quality in a comprehensive manner, and sincerely conduct the inspection and acceptance work of each phase.” continued the manager, “Owing to the enormous amount of work involved in the project, operating personnel at the peak can amount to 4,000 people, which requires a demanding management for a safe and civilized construction. We ensured the orderly proceeding of each step of construction by organizing interspersed construction, rationalizing the connection between all the procedures. Additionally, the construction security was further ensured by implementing various security training, exercises and inspection and increasing the investment in security facilities. In the whole process of construction, no major physical injury accidents occurred.”

At present, Meijiang Convention Center has been officially delivered for use. Binteng Exhibition Management Co., Ltd. was exclusively set up by Teda Construction Group for the operation of the convention center. After intense preparation work, Meijiang Convention Center was designated as the venue of 17th session of Investment and Trade Fair of Tianjin, China, and then the venue of Taiwan Brand Name Expo. In September, the convention center will serve as the venue of 2010 Summer Davos Forum, in which the representatives of the growing enterprises and statesmen worldwide would gather together in Tianjin to discuss the global economic topics. In the future, a series of conferences like China Tourism Industry Festival, Tianjin Housing Fair, Free Trade Zone Auto Show, International Mining Conference, will also be held in this convention center.
