Located at the entrance to the Bohai Sea from the Haihe River, Tianjin Port is a top-class artificial harbor in the world. In year 2008, the port had a throughput of more than 350 million tons, ranking the fifth among the major ports in the world. The container throughput reached 8.5 million equivalent units, making the port one of the top fourteen container ports in the world.

Tianjin Port is situated on the intersection point of Jingjin (Beijing and Tianjin) city zone and economic rim around Bohai Bay. It is the sea gateway for Beijing and Tianjin and an important port for foreign trade of the North China. It is also the link connecting North-east Asia and Middle-west Asia, and the east starting point of Eurasia Continental Bridge.

The present size of Tianjin Port’s water and land area is approximately 260 square kilometers. The present size of the land area is 72 square kilometers and it is planned to occupy an area of 100 square kilometers by 2010. The major sea-route at Tianjin Port is 44 kilometers in length, 19.5 meters in depth, capable of handling 250,000-ton ships with ease and 300,000-ton ships at tides.

Tianjin Port also has a strong economic connection with inland areas, reaching directly 13 inland provinces, cities and autonomous regions including Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shanxi, Inner-Mongolia, Shaanxi, Qinghai, Xinjiang, Ningxia and part of Liaoning, Henan and Shandong, covering 5 million square kilometers, which accounts for 52 percent of the total area of the country. Approximately 70 percent of the port’s throughput and over 50 percent of its import and export value come from provinces and regions other than Tianjin.

The port has extensive contacts with the world, establishing sister-port relationship with twelve ports including those of Japan, South Korea and America, and having trades with more than 600 ports of more than 180 countries and regions.

There are four major areas in Tianjin Port, namely Northern Area, Southern Area, Eastern Area and Haihe Area. Northern Area is devoted to containers and break bulk operation; Southern Area liquid bulk cargos and dry bulk cargoes; Haihe Area small-scaled water-craft operation. Eastern Area is presently under construction, and will be devoted to the establishment of the largest and most open-up free trade port area in China.

Tianjin Port is one of the most functional costal ports in China, in possession of a slew of terminals such as container terminal, iron ore terminal, charcoal terminal, petrochemicals terminal, roll-on roll-off terminal, and a variety of other specialized terminals. The newly completed Tianjin International Trading and Shipping Service Center is the largest one-stop shipping service center and electronic port in China, integrating a variety of services including Customs clearance, inspection, port services, account balancing, information services and consulting services. Tianjin International Trading and Service District, which is presently under construction, will integrate services including trading services, market operation, information and human resources sharing and business and entertainment, and grow into a CBD devoted to shipping.

The port’s throughput volume has been rapidly increasing since the beginning of the 21st Century. In 2008, the volume reached 356 million tons, ranking the fifth among all international ports.

During the period of “The Eleventh Five-Year Plan” (2006-2010), 45 billion yuan will be invested to accelerate the development of the port and upgrading it to one of the top-class international ports. The major construction projects include the 300,000-ton crude-oil port, approximately 20 container berths, Southern Area’s Bulk Cargo Logistic Center, Northern Area’s Container Logistic Center and Eastern Area’s Free Trade Port Area. Till year 2010, Tianjin Port will become a modern international deep-water port which enjoys advanced equipment, sophisticated functions, good management, efficient operation with inhabitable environment and its throughput will exceed 400 million tons, with the container throughput reaching 12 million equivalent units, over 700 container cargo flights monthly and the port upgraded to 300,000-ton level. The port will be a major container port open to North-East Asia and Middle-East Asia, the largest bulk cargo port in North China, with the biggest-scaled and most developed free trade port area. It will enjoy its position as the biggest comprehensive port in the Bohai-Rim Area and plays an important role in building Tianjin as the northern international shipping center and international logistic center.
