It has been almost two months since the Tianjin version of smoking control regulations started being implemented. By June 25, 41 phone calls for the purpose of complaining and reporting have been received, among which 36 have been dealt with on the site; general examination has been carried out to public places, legal persons and individuals for 9055 times; 103 letters of notification have been issued to indicate rectification; 2447 verbal orders have been issued to indicate rectification.

Since May 31 when Tianjin Smoking Control Regulations were implemented, obvious effects have been produced. More “No Smoking” signs are put up in public places. Over 90% of schools, hospitals and institutions have “No Smoking” signs put up. It can be apparently noticed that less and less people smoke in public places. Especially in schools, kindergartens, financial, postal, telecommunications venues, Children’s Palaces, libraries and museums, the regulations have been well implemented.

To strengthen the supervision of smoking control, the Municipal Commission for Health Improvement issued a Notice on Furthering Smoking Control in Tianjin, which asks that all the members of the Municipal Commission for Health Improvement should set up a feasible project on smoking control and strengthen supervision and law enforcement. The notice also stipulates that the feedback on smoking control complaints and reports should be done within 15 working days and regular special actions should be launched to rectify. Meanwhile, it asks that the administration and law enforcement units of public health, public security and cultural market reinforce the supervision of key venues. To those who breach the regulations, strict punishment shall be given according to law. In addition, the notice also requires the combination of smoking control with the major activities to be held in Tianjin, such as the Summer Davos and the 9th National University Games, and develop a smoke-free Davos and a smoke-free Games.
