101. Chinese Museum of Finance: the world’s eighth national-level finance museum

The Chinese Museum of Finance that opened in June 2010 is a specialist museum dedicated to China’s finance history, general financial knowledge, and the current and future state of the financial industry. It is located on 29 North Jiefang Road in Heping District, which the former site of French Club built in 1932 and the center of the Tianjin Financial City.

The Chinese Museum of Finance is the eighth national level finance museum in the world. The 2 400 m2 exhibition hall stores nearly 200 currencies, banknotes and many other precious finance-related items of China and other countries from different historical periods. The museum is divided into five parts on eight subjects. The first part is the history and current situation of finance, covering the origin and development of currency, financial institutions and instruments, financial markets, M&A, and major international financial institutions. The second part is called finance and us, covering the finance and entrepreneurs, finance and industries, finance and war, finance and politics, finance and science, and finance and arts. The third part is the history of Chinese currencies, covering the evolution of currencies in China, the history of Tianjin opening to the finance, finance celebrities and milestones in the history of finance. The fourth part is dedicated to the financial crises and tsunamis, covering the constantly updated content of the sub-prime crisis, the Great Depression, and the 1987 stock market disaster in the US, economic cycles, the 1997 Asian financial crisis, hyperinflation, and financial frauds and scandals. The fifth part is dedicated to special topic exhibitions, including gold, currency, the financial history of Tianjin’s North Jiefang Road and the planning of the financial core area in Binhai New Area.

The museum adopts a new concept in design. With voices, lighting effects and video clips, the museum focuses on showcasing a condensed history of the development of finance over the century. It has become a public space for many activities such as exhibitions, training programs, performances and forums as a new landmark in the Tianjin Financial City. It plays an active role in popularizing financial knowledge, conveying financial ideas, explaining financial innovations, bringing more people to pay attention to major problems, and promoting exchange and cooperation among players in the industry.
