Through implementing transformation of 10,000 mu reed farms, construction of wetland plant gene pool and Xinghai Lake bird reserve and other restoration projects, Tianjin Qilihai wetland surrounding ecological environment is restored. In 2013, the number of bird species surrounding the wetland increased by more than 20 over previous years. The reed warbler which had not been seen in Qilihai for years returned, and there are millions of such birds. There more than 20 new types of birds, including herring gull, heron, egret, little egret and grey crane.
