Tianjin, shortened as Jin and nicknamed as Jingu or Jinmen, means the ferry point where the son of heaven makes his crossing. It can be dated back to the dredging of the Grand Canal in Sui Dynasty (A.D. 581-618). The crossing of the South Canal and the North Canal or the present-day Sancha Hekou of Jingang Bridge saw the first birthplace of the city, historically known as the "Trident Estuary".
